About
In the last decade, progress to improve oral health in Australia has been limited and ad hoc, often sidelined by Australian governments due to other competing interests. The 2028 federal election provides a critical opportunity to make oral health a national public health priority. This satellite event will provide an update to the current state of play with current national advocacy work by the National Oral Health Alliance, and to encourage discussion where our focus needs to be, to ensure Australian governments initiates meaningful major oral health policy and funding reform.

This Vic Branch Advocacy Seminar explores the critical role of communication in advancing public health advocacy. Featuring two presentations from leading public health advocates and experts in policy and media engagement, the session will highlight practical strategies for influencing decision-makers, working with the media, and shaping public narratives. Attendees will also hear a brief update on the branch’s current advocacy campaign, including key achievements and immediate opportunities to get involved—such as amplifying messaging on social media and engaging directly with MPs and Ministers. This session is designed to inspire and equip participants to take meaningful advocacy action.

As part of the Australian Public Health Conference 2026, the PHAA Victoria Branch and the Students and Young Professionals in Public Health group are joining forces to host Beyond the Degree: From the Classroom to Experience, a breakfast panel event for public health students and emerging professionals.
The event will bring together experienced public health professionals for an informal panel conversation exploring career journeys, transitions from study into practice, different pathways across the public health sector, and lessons learned along the way. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear diverse perspectives, ask questions, and continue the conversation over breakfast in a relaxed and welcoming setting. The event aims to support meaningful connections between students, emerging professionals, and experienced practitioners while creating space for honest and practical discussion about careers beyond the classroom.

Every year, tens of thousands of Australian children are seriously injured—many in incidents that could have been prevented. In 2024–25 alone, more than 480,000 Australian children presented to Emergency Departments and over 60,000 were hospitalised due to injury. Injury remains the leading cause of death for children over the age of one. Behind these numbers are children, families and communities whose lives have been changed forever.
The good news is that we know more than ever about what causes unintentional childhood injury—and, importantly, what works to prevent it. The challenge before us is no longer simply generating evidence; it is translating knowledge into action at scale.
We invite you to join a national roundtable of leaders, experts and advocates from across Australia to explore the current state of childhood injury prevention, identify critical gaps and opportunities, and help shape practical, coordinated actions to reduce preventable injury. Hosted jointly by the PHAA Injury Prevention Special Interest Group and Kidsafe, this roundtable will bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, clinicians, community leaders and advocates who share a commitment to keeping children safe.
Your insights, experience and networks are essential. This is an opportunity to contribute to a national conversation, influence future priorities, strengthen partnerships and help build a more coordinated approach to child injury prevention.
